Apply Yourself and Apply for the Internship

I’m participating in an investigative journalism fellowship called News21 through Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  I obtained the internship after completing an online application where I had to submit a resume, cover letter, and letter of recommendation.  I only pursued the internship after receiving encouragement and support from Mrs. Patricia Thompson in the Student Media Center.  The topic of this year’s News21 investigation are hate crimes, hate groups and its victims in America.  I am learning about the tactics and best practices in investigative reporting, data journalism and research.  I am also learning about the hate crimes, hate groups, and hate crime laws throughout America while focusing on Mississippi.  It is my assignment to research the state.  I advise other students to go out on a limb and apply for that internship you think you have no shot at — because you just might have a shot!  I was not confident in myself when originally looking at the specifics of the News21 internship, but because someone (Mrs. Pat) supported me and saw my potential, I decided to apply and was chosen.  Sometimes, you just have to believe in yourself and your abilities and the rest will fall in place.
